Cuauhtémoc Blanco faces impeachment request over sexual abuse allegations
On February 6, 2025, Uriel Carmona, head of the Morelos State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), formally requested the impeachment of Cuauhtémoc Blanco, former soccer star and current federal deputy, to address a sexual abuse accusation. While Ricardo Monreal refrained from making premature judgments, he assured that the process would strictly adhere to legal protocols.
The request, now in the hands of the Chamber of Deputies, raises significant political and legal questions. Blanco, a high-profile figure both in sports and politics, has faced multiple allegations in the past, but this is the first formal move toward stripping him of his legislative immunity.
Monreal: “The majority group will act in accordance with the law”
During a press briefing, Ricardo Monreal, president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo), stated that he was unaware of the specifics of the case. He emphasized that neither he nor his party would engage in prejudgment, reinforcing that due process must be respected.
“I do not prejudge. Neither party in this legal dispute deserves disqualification. What I can assure you is that the majority group will act in strict accordance with the law and justice,” Monreal declared.
His statements suggest that the ruling party will not interfere politically in the case, avoiding any perception of favoritism or persecution. However, given the political tensions surrounding the case, neutrality may prove challenging.

Political tensions rise as impeachment process unfolds
Hugo Eric Flores, president of the Chamber’s Instructing Section, also spoke on the case, reiterating that the proceedings would be handled impartially.
«A fair process is guaranteed for any deputy or official with immunity. Political considerations will not influence this decision, as it is essential to maintain judicial integrity,» Flores stated.
It is worth noting that Flores has previously accused Blanco of fueling violence in Morelos and mismanaging state funds during his tenure as governor. This history of conflict between the two politicians raises concerns about the objectivity of the proceedings.
Despite this, Monreal expressed confidence that the impeachment process would be conducted fairly. «The Instructing Section will carry out its work impartially and objectively,» he assured.
The allegations: a serious accusation from a family member
The sexual abuse allegations against Cuauhtémoc Blanco stem from a complaint filed in late 2023 by his half-sister. According to the case file, she accused Blanco of pressuring her into sexual relations under the threat of losing her position in the Morelos Ministry of Economic Development and Labor.
These serious accusations add another layer of complexity to the case, as they involve not only a high-profile politician but also sensitive familial and workplace dynamics. If the impeachment request is approved, Blanco could face criminal charges without the shield of legislative immunity.
What’s next in Cuauhtémoc Blanco’s impeachment case?
The impeachment process will now proceed through the Chamber of Deputies, where the Instructing Section will analyze the evidence and determine whether Blanco’s immunity should be lifted. If approved, he would be subject to trial like any other citizen.
Given the political and media attention surrounding the case, it is expected to spark intense debates both within Congress and among the public. The outcome could set a precedent for how similar cases involving public figures are handled in Mexico.
As the legal battle unfolds, the question remains: will justice be served, or will political interests shape the process? The next few weeks will be crucial in determining Cuauhtémoc Blanco’s fate.
