A massive fire at Mexico City’s Central de Abasto (CEDA) destroyed 70 stalls and two arcades, leaving vendors without a place to operate. Mayor Clara Brugada assured that reconstruction will begin as soon as possible, but only after Protection Civil and the Institute for Structural Safety complete their reports and the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJCDMX) grants clearance.
Investigation and Reconstruction Plans Underway
On Sunday, Mayor Brugada visited the affected areas, including the Flowers, Vegetables, Groceries, and Provisions section, where 1,600 square meters of market space were damaged. During her tour, she assured the community that the city government would provide support and a temporary space for affected vendors.
“The goal is to ensure that no vendor is left without a place to work while reconstruction is underway,” Brugada emphasized.
Authorities are still conducting inspections to determine the fire’s cause and assess the structural damage. Once Protection Civil and the Structural Safety Institute complete their evaluations, the city will clear debris and begin the rebuilding process.
Government Promises New Infrastructure to Prevent Future Fires
During her visit, Brugada acknowledged the urgent need for improved fire prevention measures at Central de Abasto. She committed to:
✔ Enhanced fire prevention infrastructure
✔ Upgrades to the market’s hydraulic systems
✔ Improved emergency response coordination
“These improvements will help prevent another fire of this magnitude,” she assured vendors and shoppers.
Over 700 First Responders Assisted in Fire Containment
Brugada praised the efforts of more than 700 first responders, including:
- Mexico City’s Heroic Fire Department (HCB)
- Mexico City’s Public Security Secretariat (SSC)
- The Civil Protection Secretariat (SGIRyPC)
- Iztapalapa municipal authorities
- Mexican Red Cross paramedics and emergency brigades
Their quick response prevented further damage and casualties, with no reported injuries following the fire.
Vigilance and Security Remain in Place
Even as investigations continue, security measures have been reinforced in the affected areas of Central de Abasto to prevent further incidents. Authorities have assured the public that market operations remain open in unaffected sections.
What Happens Next?
1️⃣ Safety Evaluations – Civil Protection and Structural Safety Institute will assess the area.
2️⃣ Clearance from Prosecutors – The FGJCDMX must approve site access for reconstruction.
3️⃣ Temporary Vendor Relocation – Affected vendors will receive alternative locations to continue their businesses.
4️⃣ Market Reconstruction – Once safety assessments are complete, cleanup and rebuilding will begin.
A Market Rebuild with Stronger Protections
The Central de Abasto fire was a devastating event for vendors and shoppers alike. However, Mexico City authorities have committed to a swift recovery process, ensuring that vendors can resume operations as soon as possible while also improving fire prevention infrastructure for the future.
As investigations continue, the city is prioritizing both safety and economic stability to ensure Mexico’s largest wholesale market recovers quickly.
