Puebla Archbishop Calls for Justice After Child’s Tragic Death

During Sunday Mass at the Basilica Cathedral of Puebla, Archbishop Víctor Sánchez Espinosa addressed the tragic death of René Emiliano, a child who fell victim to rising violence in Zacatlán. The heartbreaking loss has left the community in shock, prompting the archbishop to call for immediate security measures to prevent further tragedies.

«It is unacceptable that a child, just a few months old, loses his life so tragically,» Sánchez Espinosa declared, urging authorities to take urgent action.

A Call for Justice and Security in Puebla

The archbishop’s message was not only a prayer for René Emiliano’s eternal rest, but also a strong plea for government officials to prioritize public safety.

With violence increasing across various regions of Puebla, Sánchez Espinosa’s call resonates deeply with citizens demanding stronger protections. He stressed that leaders must uphold their duty to safeguard communities, especially the most vulnerable, like children and families.

Faith, Mission, and the 2025 Jubilee Year

Beyond addressing the security crisis, the Archbishop of Puebla emphasized the spiritual mission of all believers.

  • He reminded the congregation that through baptism, Christians receive a divine calling to be disciples and missionaries.
  • He encouraged people not to use human limitations as an excuse to avoid fulfilling their life’s mission.
  • He highlighted that each person has a purpose—whether in family, work, or faith—that must be embraced.

In the spirit of the 2025 Jubilee Year, proclaimed by Pope Francis, Sánchez Espinosa reflected on its significance:

«A jubilee is a time of grace, joy, and forgiveness—a moment when the Lord grants indulgences to those who seek Him with sincerity.»

He urged Catholics to prepare by:

  • Confessing their sins
  • Attending Mass regularly
  • Passing through the Holy Doors of Forgiveness

Pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe

As part of the Jubilee celebrations, Sánchez Espinosa announced his pilgrimage to Puebla’s 12 Holy Doors, starting with communities in Zacatlán and Zacapoaxtla.

His itinerary includes:

  • Northern Puebla – Zacatlán and Zacapoaxtla
  • Southern Puebla – Izúcar de Matamoros and Chiautla de Tapia
  • Eastern Puebla – San Andrés Chalchicomula and Libres
  • Western Puebla – The Royal Chapel of Cholula and San Martín Texmelucan
  • Central Puebla – Tepeaca and Tecamachalco

Additionally, he reminded worshippers that the annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe will take place on February 12, urging travelers and motorists to exercise patience.

A Message of Hope Amid Tragedy

While René Emiliano’s death serves as a tragic reminder of Puebla’s ongoing security challenges, Archbishop Sánchez Espinosa’s message calls for both justice and spiritual renewal.

As the community grieves, his words offer a path of faith, unity, and action, urging both government officials and citizens to work toward a safer, more just society.
