New Tourist Fee Approved for Puerto Vallarta Visitors
Foreign tourists traveling to Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, will soon be required to pay a new entry tax upon arrival. The Jalisco State Congress recently approved the initiative, and local authorities expect the measure to take effect within a month after its publication in the Official Gazette of the State of Jalisco.
The tax aims to generate additional revenue for municipal infrastructure development and will be collected at the Puerto Vallarta International Airport and the city’s port terminal.
How Much Is the Puerto Vallarta Tourist Tax?
According to Rodrigo Pérez, Puerto Vallarta’s treasurer, the tax will amount to 141 Mexican pesos (approximately $7 USD) per person, per visit. This one-time fee will apply regardless of the length of stay and will be collected as part of the arrival process.
Visitors will receive a payment receipt confirming the transaction, allowing them to enjoy the destination without further charges.
Where and How Will the Fee Be Collected?

The new tax will be collected through designated payment counters at:
- Puerto Vallarta International Airport
- Puerto Vallarta’s Integral Port Administration (API)
Tourists will be invited to stop at these counters upon arrival, where municipal personnel will facilitate the payment process.
Payment Methods and Online Options
To ensure convenience, tourists will be able to pay the tax using:
- Cash (Mexican pesos or USD)
- Credit or debit cards
- Online payment through a designated platform (to be launched soon)
Why Is Puerto Vallarta Implementing a Tourist Tax?
City officials emphasize that the funds collected will be reinvested into Puerto Vallarta’s infrastructure, improving roads, public spaces, and tourism services. Local authorities argue that the new fee will help maintain the city’s status as a top international travel destination.
The new tax follows similar models already in place in other popular tourist destinations, such as Cancún and Quintana Roo, where foreign visitors contribute financially to local development.
When Will the Tourist Tax Take Effect?
The measure is expected to become official within a month, pending its publication in Jalisco’s Official Gazette. Once implemented, all foreign visitors arriving in Puerto Vallarta will be required to pay the mandatory fee upon entry.
