Claudia Sheinbaum Rejects National Ban on Narcocorridos, Focuses on Awareness

The recent ban on narcocorridos in Nayarit has sparked national debate. Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero implemented the measure to curb violence and criminal glorification, prohibiting the performance and broadcasting of narcocorridos, corridos tumbados, and other similar music genres in public spaces.

However, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum made it clear during her morning press conference on February 7, 2025, that she does not support a nationwide ban. Instead, she advocates for awareness, education, and positive cultural shifts within the regional music industry.

Sheinbaum Rejects a National Ban on Narcocorridos

During La Mañanera, a reporter asked Sheinbaum whether the government would implement Nayarit’s narcocorrido ban at a national level. She responded:

“I don’t agree with prohibiting. I believe in awareness and education. We should open new ways to create corridos tumbados that do not glorify violence, drugs, or discrimination against women. Prohibiting a musical genre is very difficult.”

Instead of censorship, the Mexican government aims to promote alternative narratives in regional music, encouraging artists to explore themes beyond crime and violence.

A New Approach: Promoting Music Without Violence

As part of this cultural shift, Sheinbaum announced an upcoming Mexican music festival in Durango, where corridos tumbados will be included but with different messages.

«In Durango, we will host a festival celebrating Mexican music, featuring corridos tumbados that focus on love, peace, happiness, heartbreak—everything that makes music beautiful, without glorifying violence.»

This approach seeks to preserve the artistic expression of corridos while redirecting their content towards constructive and positive themes.

Details of Nayarit’s Narcocorrido Ban

The decree, published on February 4, 2025, in Nayarit’s official government bulletin, explicitly prohibits:

  • Performing or broadcasting narcocorridos and related genres in:
    • Public events
    • Plazas
    • Auditoriums
    • Stadiums
    • Entertainment venues
    • Fairs

The goal of the ban, according to Governor Navarro Quintero, is to protect the state from content that promotes illicit activities and criminal lifestyles.

«The fundamental reason for this measure is to shield our state from content that incites crime and glorifies delinquent lifestyles, which contradict the values of peace and respect we seek to promote.»

A Divided Debate: Censorship vs. Artistic Freedom

The controversy surrounding narcocorridos has long divided public opinion. While some argue that these songs document real-life struggles and should not be censored, others believe they promote and normalize crime.

Arguments in Favor of the Ban

  • Helps reduce criminal influence in young audiences
  • Aligns with efforts to reduce violence
  • Prevents glorification of drug cartels

Arguments Against the Ban

  • Violates freedom of expression
  • Fails to address underlying social issues
  • May lead to greater popularity through underground consumption

What’s Next for Narcocorridos in Mexico?

While Nayarit has taken a firm stance, Sheinbaum’s approach suggests that Mexico will not implement a federal ban. Instead, the government aims to shift cultural narratives through public awareness campaigns and industry collaboration.

This debate over censorship vs. artistic freedom is far from over, but Sheinbaum’s strategy of education and alternative storytelling could pave the way for a new era of Mexican regional music.
