On the 112th anniversary of the Marcha de la Lealtad, Mexico’s Secretary of Defense, Ricardo Trevilla, publicly reaffirmed the loyalty of the nation’s armed forces to President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. Speaking from the historic Chapultepec Castle, Trevilla declared that Mexico’s sovereignty is non-negotiable, sending a strong message amid recent diplomatic tensions with the United States.

The Marcha de la Lealtad: A Historic Symbol of Military Commitment

The Marcha de la Lealtad commemorates the 1913 defense of President Francisco I. Madero by military cadets during an attempted coup. Over a century later, the event serves as a symbol of the military’s unwavering loyalty to the country’s leadership and democratic institutions.

This year’s ceremony was especially significant, as it marked Sheinbaum’s first as Commander-in-Chief and included a historic participation of an all-female rifle platoon, showcasing the evolution of gender roles in Mexico’s military.

A Direct Message on National Sovereignty

During his address, Trevilla made a firm declaration about the military’s role in defending Mexico’s independence and territorial integrity:

«Loyalty always to the presidential institution and the Republic, but above all, unwavering loyalty to a free, sovereign, and independent Mexico.»

This statement comes shortly after the Biden administration postponed potential tariffs on Mexico and reconsidered a proposal to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations—a move that could have led to U.S. military intervention in Mexico’s internal affairs.

Trevilla praised Sheinbaum’s leadership in handling these diplomatic challenges, stating:

«She has acted with courage and wisdom in managing these disputes with the U.S. government.»

The Role of Mexico’s Military in National Security

Trevilla also addressed the ongoing responsibilities of the armed forces, emphasizing their role in:

  • National security and countering organized crime.
  • Supporting economic and social development despite limited resources.
  • Defending Mexico’s sovereignty in an era of increasing geopolitical tensions.

The event reinforced the close ties between Mexico’s civilian government and its military, an important relationship amid rising concerns over border security, trade agreements, and crime-related violence.

A Historic Ceremony with a Focus on Inclusion

This year’s Marcha de la Lealtad also marked a milestone in military representation, featuring:

  • A female-led rifle platoon performing a ceremonial drill for the first time.
  • Military leaders in active service and retirement, alongside foreign military attachés.
  • The full presidential cabinet, underscoring the administration’s focus on national defense.

Mexico’s Military Commitment in a Shifting Political Landscape

At a time of heightened U.S.-Mexico tensions, Trevilla’s speech sends a clear message—Mexico’s sovereignty will not be compromised. With Sheinbaum at the helm, the military has pledged unwavering support to her leadership and the nation’s long-standing commitment to independence. As Mexico navigates complex challenges, from border disputes to organized crime, the role of its armed forces remains a crucial pillar of national stability and security.
