Julio González, one of Pumas UNAM’s standout goalkeepers, found himself unexpectedly leaving the club despite having played 101 matches and earning a solid reputation. His departure came after a locker room altercation with fellow goalkeeper Gil Alcalá, leading Pumas to part ways with both players.
Now, as he prepares for his new chapter with Puebla, González breaks his silence about the controversial decision and his ambitions moving forward.
Locker Room Conflict Led to Julio González’s Departure from Pumas
During a press conference ahead of Puebla’s match against Club América, González explained how the incident in the Pumas locker room ultimately resulted in his exit.
“It was a locker room argument, something that happens in any team. They decided that both goalkeepers had to leave, and that was it.”
Despite the abrupt decision, González holds no resentment toward Pumas and maintains a positive outlook on his departure.
“I have a clear conscience. I know who I am and what happened. Everything was clarified, and today, I am grateful for this opportunity with Puebla.”
New Chapter with Puebla: Julio González’s Fresh Start
Following his exit from Pumas, Puebla showed immediate interest in signing the experienced goalkeeper.
“First, I want to thank Puebla for trusting me. They reached out as soon as my departure from Pumas was announced. Their interest was genuine, and I also wanted to be here. I’m really happy with my present situation.”
For González, joining Puebla is more than just a career move—it’s a return to the team he supported as a child.
“I grew up watching Puebla. This club has a special meaning for me, and now, wearing these colors is an incredible opportunity.”
However, he acknowledges that earning the starting position won’t be easy, as he competes with Miguel Jiménez, Jesús Rodríguez, and Juan Gómez for a spot in the lineup.
“We are four goalkeepers, and we all want to play. Coach Pablo Guede made it clear that the competition will be tough, so I’m pushing myself to be at my best.”
Will Julio González Return to the Mexican National Team?
González has previously represented Mexico’s national team, and while his primary focus is on Puebla, he hasn’t ruled out a return to El Tri.
“My main goal is to play regularly and help Puebla reach its potential—whether that means qualifying for the Play-In or avoiding the relegation fine. If I perform well at the club level, the national team call-up will come naturally.”
Reflecting on his past experiences, González remains optimistic:
“My performances with Pumas got me to the national team. Now, I hope to do the same with Puebla.”
