Songwriter Ed Sheeran has sent a personal apology message to Lionel Messi ’s wife Antonela Roccuzzo.
Ed Sheeran and Lionel Messi met on 28 September, when the English musician took in PSG’s two-goal victory at home to Manchester City in the Champions League.
That was the night where Messi scored his first goal for Les Parisiens; a fine individual run and shot from outside the area.
After the match, the Argentine superstar caught up with Sheeran and the two posed together for a photograph – with Messi suited in his PSG tracksuit in a picture which accumulated almost 12million likes – with the player adding the caption: “A pleasure to meet you, superstar Ed.”
That left the footballer’s wife Antonela devastated – she is a diehard fan of the musician but was not present to meet up with him at the game, staged at the Parc des Princes.
Sofia Balbi – the wife of Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez – wrote under the published photo of Messi and Sheeran, referencing Roccuzzo: “Someone I know loves this photo.”
Balbi and Roccuzzo share a close friendship, with their families still going on holidays together despite Messi and Suarez no longer being teammates at club level.
That prompted Messi to respond to Balbi’s comment: “'She missed out on the photo but he said hello.”
This week, Sheeran was interviewed by the Argentine actress and broadcaster Daniela Aita – a close friend of Messi’s wife.
In the middle of the interview, Aita paused to allow Sheeran to send a personal message to Roccuzzo and give her a special invite.
Sheeran, addressing Messi’s wife directly, said: “Hi Anto, I’m here with my friend Ed who wants to tell you something.
“I was so sorry not to meet you in Paris but I’m going to be in the Stade de France playing next summer if you want to come.
“Anytime you want to come to a show feel free and I’ll see you there.”
Sheeran then took a copy of his new album LP Equals, showed it to the camera and continued: “And I’ve got a vinyl for you too. Lots of love.”
Sheeran is scheduled to perform next July in the Stade de France – the home of the France national football team, and the city’s main stadium other than the Parc des Princes - and he has now paved the way for Messi’s family to be VIP guests at the event.
Aita, laughing in the background, added: “I will go with you too, I’m going to join you guys.”
Of course, being a high-profile resident in the French capital ensures that Messi will continue to demand plenty of attention from the celebrities who visit the city.
